Welcome to the Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation grant application guideline page. This page contains all of the information you need to determine if your organization is eligible for a grant from the Foundation and to ensure your application is completed correctly. Before approaching the Foundation, you are encouraged to review the website to determine if your organization falls within the stated guidelines.
Purpose of the Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation
• The Foundation’s purpose is to provide funding to registered charitable organizations in Ontario that are involved in innovative projects directly supporting their particular community or constituency.
• Note: An organization is a registered charity only after successfully receiving that designation from the Canada Revenue Agency. Not-for-profit organizations incorporated under provincial statutes are, in most cases, exempt from paying any tax on their earnings but are not automatically granted charitable status. Grant Preferences
• The Foundation is focused on seed funding with grants typically ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.
• First consideration will be given to requests for support of newly established organizations, as well as new projects or programs undertaken by existing organizations.
• The Foundation appreciates when grant recipients report on their projects and disseminate the results of their initiatives.

Limitations
Grants are typically not made for the following:
• Building/capital campaigns, renovations, equipment or furnishings, vehicles or other acquisitions
• Operating budgets or salaries
• Fundraising campaigns, benefits, endowments, sponsorships, emergency funding or other special events
• Personal appeals for financial support
• Individuals, hospitals, universities or associations
• Organizations with primary operations outside of Ontario, Canada
• Retroactive requests (for projects already completed)
• Gifts to the same organization 2 years in a row
Application Check List
• 1 to 4 page letter addressed to the Secretary
• It should give a full description of the organization’s objectives and activities and a detailed description of the specific initiative for which assistance is requested, highlighting any unique features of the organization, service or project.
• Copy of the organization’s most recent audited financial statements
• Budget for the specific initiative
• Listing of Board of Directors
• Completed grant application cover sheet (click here to download) including your organization’s Charitable Registration Number
Grant Decisions
The Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation’s executive usually meets twice a year to review grants (spring and fall). Their job is to determine an organizations’ eligibility to apply to the Sir Joseph Flavelle Foundation, to oversee the review process and ultimately determine whether an organizations’ grant will be approved. The list of current executive members is located on the website under the Executive section.
All grant results are sent by mail, 2 to 3 weeks after the decision is made at executive meetings.
